Supporting Natuurpunt’s first nature reserve in Brussels !

For the first time, the Brussels branch of Natuurpunt has managed to buy land in Brussels — a milestone in a metropolitan context where open space is scarce. It is an area of no less than 4.1 hectares along the Molenbeek, on the territory of Ganshoren. The name of the reserve is Gansbroek.

The purchased plots consist of wet grasslands and a very humid poplar forest, and border the existing Natura 2000 area: the Varera of Ganshoren. On the other side of the Molenbeek are Erik’s Boomgaard and the Kerremanspark. This is how one large, contiguous nature reserve along the Molenbeek is created, where rare plants as forest orchids will have new chances to develop.

Creating a new nature reserve in the hearth of Brabant Wallon

Natagora will use the funds to create a vibrant new 16.5-hectare nature reserve In Brabant Wallon that will restore rare habitats like dry heathlands and sandy oak-birch forests, welcoming emblematic species such as the long-eared owl and viviparous lizard. Beyond its ecological richness, the site holds Bronze Age burial mounds and historic trails that whisper stories of the past. As part of the Natura 2000 network, it forms a vital ecological corridor between the Dyle and Meuse valleys. Find out more about the project here.
